History of St Andrews Golf Course, Hamilton. St Andrews of Hamilton was founded in 1903, and over the first 10 years had three different homes on nine-hole courses.
In 1910, H T Gillies, a scratch golfer and local lawyer, purchased the present property. It was great links style country and with the help of NZ Amateur Champion Arthur Duncan of Wellington, he developed the layout.
By 1913 the course was ready for play. He named it St Andrews, and the Club has played on the course since it's opening in April 1913.
While originally an inland links style course, today it is a picturesque course, with some holes bordering the mighty Waikato River. This gives the St Andrews course a very tranquil and relaxed setting. None more so the challenging par 5 fourth hole. The short dogleg gives the player many options on the drive and second shot, but the river is always lurking to catch the wayward shot.
The signature hole would have to be the par 3 18th. While protected by bunkers surrounding the green that catch any shot lacking in direction and distance, it's the 2 metre deep front bunker that's most intimidating.
As you can see the History of St Andrews Golf Course, Hamilton is great, so come test you game at St Andrews and you might create your own history.
